      '06 Earthquake Centennial Alliance

Objective: Use the centennial of the 1906 earthquake to highlight a century of progress in understanding earthquake hazards and reducing risks as well as to commemorate the cultural and social response to this historic event.

April 18, 2006 will mark the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake and fire, a seminal event in the scientific study of earthquakes as well as in the cultural and social history of California. The upcoming 100th anniversary provides a unique opportunity to increase public awareness of seismic hazard as well as earthquake preparedness and mitigation. It also affords a retrospective analysis of the ways in which this major natural disaster affected the personal lives, culture, economy and development of Northern California.

The '06 Earthquake Centennial Alliance has been formed to help coordinate efforts and activities between organizations throughout Northern California planning to commemorate the earthquake. The Alliance brings together policy makers, scientists, engineers, historians, teachers, and emergency responders to explore the lessons learned from this earthquake and ways to minimize the impact of future earthquakes on the San Francisco Bay area. The Alliance plans to provide guides and brochures to the entire collection of centennial events as well as marketing and overall coordination of public relations for a wide range of planned activities that include:
